Final Thoughts

I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Star Wars Battlefront 2 beta this weekend and unfortunately I can’t say that I was terribly impressed.  It wasn’t bad by any means really, but it just didn’t really feel like anything new.  It was basically a better version of the previous release thanks to more content.  Just like the first game it is certainly a visual treat, but this fades away after a little while, especially if you aren’t a big Star Wars fan.

One thing that irked me is that all the classes, at least on the Droid Army, looked so similar.  In the original games there was so much more variety in what you could spawn as, but in this you basically just have four different classes of basic battle droids.  This only is mixed up with the special units and heroes/villains which you can spawn as if you save up enough points.  Unless you are somewhere from decent to very good, then good luck getting to play as a hero or villain as they require a good chunk of points.  You also have to hope one of the available characters isn’t already being actively played too.  Overall the point system is probably a good replacement for the previous power-up based system though since ideally you’d want your best players taking control of game changing units anyway.

Basically if you loved the 2015 release, then there is a good chance you’ll love this one even more.  I suppose I’ll have to wait and see what the other content is like at launch, and if the post-launch content plans actually include something on part with what would normally be considered paid content.  For those that didn’t know, this entry does not feature a season pass or paid DLC, instead opting for a loot box microtransaction model to fund future content releases.  This unfortunately brings on a potentially major pay to win problem into the game considering a majority of the items coming from these boxes are loadout items that increase the power of units, weapons, heroes, and more.

As of now I’m probably going to hold off on purchasing the game, perhaps keeping an eye on updates it receives and crossing my fingers for a sale.  Besides I’m hoping I’ll still be enjoying Destiny 2 by that time and maybe even Super Mario Odyssey if I’m trying to 100 percent it.

Hope you all had a great week!
