I conveyed my thoughts on this to an extent in the original post, but one interesting rumor that popped up this week was that not only would Ridge Racer 8 be a Nintendo Switch exclusive, but Bandai Namco Singapore could possibly be working on Metroid Prime 4. The Ridge Racer 8 news is very believable and shouldn’t be questioned too much considering the series has jumped around many platforms despite possibly being most well known for the original PlayStation titles. Them developing Metroid Prime 4 does raise some questions, however still does sound possible in some ways.
Before this rumor we knew that Metroid Prime 4 was being developed by a “talented new development team”. Bandai Nacmo is by no means a new developer obviously, however the specific Singapore studio within that company has only been around since about 2013 meaning they probably haven’t had many huge titles under their belt and could be considered relatively new. Keep in mind that Metroid Prime 4 has also probably been in some sort of developmental state for a couple years at least meaning the studio would have been even younger from the beginning of the project.
So we can probably justify them as a new team and check that criteria off, but what about the fact that the LinkedIn experience listing detailed the game as an unannounced IP. Metroid Prime 4 is neither a new IP or unannounced game which one might think is debunk worthy, however I don’t think it’s that easy to throw the possibility out. The news of what studio is working on the game has been very secretive and under wraps, so I’m guessing that this individual was aware of that and used this wording to keep it a mystery. However why he would follow this up by just suddenly revealing the existence of Ridge Racer 8 for the Switch is beyond me. Apparently several members of this same studio were also revealed to be working on some secret project as well which seems to be the same one referenced here.
The last detail that does make me believe this to be true is the fact that it is described as a first-person shooter / adventure game exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Metroid Prime 4 obviously fits that description and while a FPS adventure game sounds a bit broad to be a specific title, I just don’t see a studio developing a Switch exclusive first-person shooter unless it is using a popular IP such as this. Ports like DOOM make sense since it was an established great shooter that many would enjoy the novelty of having a portable version of it. I suppose it’s not impossible that it really could be some new IP, but it would be a huge risk as the audience looking to play new shooters is usually on PC or one of the two higher end consoles available. It would be very bizarre to me to see something that like only for Switch, abandoning hundreds of thousands and potentially millions of sales on key platforms.
I can’t really say how I feel about them developing the game if that is indeed true since I’m not really familiar with their track record. Considering the studio hasn’t been around for very long though, much of the experience will come from what each individual brings. Overall I think I am pretty optimistic as I would like to see some new minds give their own spin on Metroid Prime. I personally am hoping it will capture some of that raw Metroid feel that I got from the original on Gamecube, but with some amount of evolution similar to what we saw happen with Zelda last year. I’d be okay with something that just feels like more Metroid Prime, but it would be nice to feel very impressed if not blown away.
I’m assuming the game will be one of the big showcase titles at E3 this year so we should hopefully not have to wait long to see what the title is all about and how its changed.
Hope you all have a great week!
