Final Thoughts

We had a handful of rumors, reveals, and E3 updates this week.  I’ll go over a few of the big ones for this week’s blog as promised.

Black Ops IIII Reveal – The game was officially unveiled and some rumors turned out to be true such as the lack of a campaign, the new inclusion of a battle royale mode, and its exclusivity to Battle.net for the PC version.  I’ve said in the past that I’m done with this series and I’m pretty sure I’m still standing by that.  I don’t have any interest in yet another new spin on battle royale, the standard Call of Duty multiplayer just isn’t for me, and I guess zombies could be fun but it’s not worth 60 bucks if I’m only interested in trying one mode.  I’m not so sure that battle royale will make up for the lack of a campaign for fans, mostly because they will be so late at the game that I don’t think people will care when the game finally releases.  Maybe if it was ready to go within the next month or so, but in October?  I’m sure it will be flavor of the month at the very least, but we’ll see.  The game coming to Battle.net also has me concerned about the platform becoming flooded with yearly releases.  They will have to either redesign Battle.net or add a Call of Duty section to keep things organized.

RAGE 2 – RAGE 2 was announced ahead of E3 this week too, not generating as much excitement as Call of Duty, which was to be expected.  RAGE is a game I think a lot of people either forgot about or just kind of remember it being announced and for that reason I am concerned the sequel will fall into the same obscurity all over again.  There is just nothing about it that gives it its own unique identity, its basically a open world shooter in a post apocalyptic world, something which has been done in big ways more than once.  Maybe Bethesda will change my mind about this one at E3 though when it is shown off more so we’ll see.

Star Fox Grand Prix – This was one of two big rumors/leaks this week and is apparently the secret project that Retro Studios has been chipping away since wrapping up development on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.  It is said to be a hybrid game, mixing staple Star Fox series gameplay elements with a racing game.  This is done through races that have enemy AI active as the race is ongoing and killing enemies provides speed boosts.  There will even be bosses that appear mid-race in the game’s full blown story mode that even has a hub area similar to Diddy Kong Racing.  This seems like a bizarre way to try and reboot Star Fox if that is the intention, but it is Retro Studios so I have confidence that they will make a solid game whatever it might be.

Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee – I covered this already some this week, but I’ll do a recap. The supposed upcoming Pokemon game for switch will have two version and essentially would serve as a full reimagining of Pokemon Yellow in 3D meaning it will likely focus heavily on generation 1 Pokemon with starters being either Pikachu or Eevee depending on what version you chose.  Leakers claim the game will also link up with Pokemon GO, something Nintendo had planned to do previously with Pokemon Sun and Moon, but it never panned out.  It will even apparently be taking some pages from Pokemon GO itself, using a catching system that is very similar.  There initially was little evidence to confirm this, however shortly after the leak buzz was happening, domains were registered with the game’s names by a company that has been a registrar for Nintendo previously.  Rumor has it the games will be revealed this month before E3 too so stay tuned.

Borderlands 3 – Not much to talk about hear other than a rumored E3 appearance of this game was basically shot down by saying it won’t be showing up in any form so don’t expect to be hearing anything about this sequel anytime soon unless it was a big lie to keep a surprise secret.

Battlefield V – Not much to say here either, but a reveal is happening this week.  With Call of Duty showing what they have to offer already, it will be interesting to see if EA has a big counter planned.  I come in expecting yet another battle royale mode, but I hope there spin on it is at least more inspired.

Square Enix Avengers – There wasn’t a whole lot of talk about this, but just wanted to remind people there still is a live rumor that the previously announced Square Enix Avengers game will essentially be their answer to Destiny and Anthem.  If this is true I can see this having huge potential as the leading title in this game war due to it having such a popular IP attached to it.  If this is the case it is likely that players will be making their own heroes (and maybe villains?) rather than playing is already existing ones.

Come back next week for more E3 rumors and news, which will at the very least include my thoughts on Battlefield V.  If we are indeed looking at a pre-E3 Pokemon reveal we should be getting news on that any time now too so stay tuned.
