Final Thoughts

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate was easily the star of the week so that will my focus this weekend.  I’ll instead save my Monster Hunter World PC port thoughts for a review or impressions post later in the week probably.

The night before there was a leak essentially confirming we would see Simon Belmont revealed, a character while I’m not surprised to see due to earlier leaks, I am very excited for as a fan of the Castlevania series.  It’s also relieving to see they went with his classic appearance design which has a more westernized look compared to your typical Japanese video game character.  They managed to cram in another surprise in his trailer even with a Richter Belmont echo fighter reveal.

A couple more echo fighters were announced as well, Chrom and Dark Samus.  I am curious at this point if there eventual plan is to have echo fighter options for most characters.  This of course I don’t expect to be available for launch, but I can see post-launch plans to continually introduce new echo fighters.  Just about every major launch from Nintendo on the Switch has seen post-launch support, so it would make sense for us to see something.

After those reveals I felt there was no way they’d reveal anything else notable, but sure enough they dropped a true surprise with King K. Rool hopping aboard.  The character appeared in a lot of leaks, but there was nothing concrete to support him being revealed outside of his popularity.  If you didn’t know, King K. Rool is essentially the Ridley type character for Japanese fans.  Sakurai likely wanted to make sure he pleased his fellow Japanese gamers as well which is why we are seeing the character.  Seeing two long requested characters finally enter the ring is this entry is leading me to believe that Sakurai is doing everything he can to add the most popular long requested characters to the game.  Does this mean we’ll see the elusive Geno added?  Possibly, but his lack of representation in Nintendo history may hurt his chances.

Outside of the character reveals a lot of other content was covered as well including stages, items, modes, and music.  We learned exciting details such as that there will be over 100 stages and over 800 music tracks which is an impressive feat.  It’s clear they want to make sure that the character roster isn’t the only thing that is massive.

At this point I’m now questioning how much more we can really expect to see revealed before launch.  Sakurai initially told us not to expect too many new characters revealed, and suddenly today he reveals five more.  There was confirmation we’d definitely see at least a few more fighters revealed, but it’s hard to say how many more unique new fighters we’ll see and if most of these will be echos.  Every Smash Bros. game seems to have that unexpected character from Nintendo’s history, so I’m assuming we’ll see one of those again whatever it may be.  Previously it has been Mr. Game and Watch, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt.  I suppose we can give an honorable mention to Wii Fit Trainer as well for being truly unexpected, even they weren’t from Nintendo’s early days.

Somewhat shifting topics, all this Castlevania love in the direct with there being two characters, a stage, and over 30 music tracks makes me believe there must be some new Castlevania title in the works for Nintendo Switch.  There was a rumor of a collection of games which would be great as well as long as it included beyond the classics and mixed in some of the Metriodvania style ones which I personally favor.  A Harmony of Despair Switch port would be awesome as well, and would work great for local coop since you could utilize 6 joy-con.

Anyway, as I mentioned keep an eye out for my thoughts on the Monster Hunter World PC port which has certainly been a bittersweet experience for me with it being a great game held back by severe optimization issues.
