Update: The headset was officially announced and the specs are correct. It does include the Deluxe Audio Strap and have that increased resolution. Other new details include smaller and improved tracking base stations. They will initially sell the headset as an upgrade to existing owners without the controllers or base station, later on offering a full bundle option. The upgrade option is expected to release very soon, sometime this quarter. The Pro is fully compatible with previous Vive devices which is why the upgrade option is being made available.
HTC’s teased Vive related announcement today has possibly surfaced a bit early thanks to a leak that it is indeed a new version of the VR headset called the Vive Pro.
The new headset would feature a 78 percent improve resolution at 2,880 × 1,600 and include onboard speakers. It wasn’t clear if this would be a built-in version of the deluxe audio strap or something entirely new.
The icing on the cake is the announcement of the Vive Wireless Adapter, an premium purchase accessory which will provide a new option for PC VR enthusiasts to be wire-free. The technology used to make this possible is based on Intel’s WiGig connection and it is planned to launch sometime during Q3 2018.
We’ll be sure to update this post with any official news that surfaces such as price or release date information. A premium price is expected as they do plan to keep the standard Vive on the market along with the Pro model.
